The Sum of our Prehistories exhibition

Musée de Picardie

It was between Abbeville and Amiens that prehistory was born as a scientific discipline in the middle of the 19th century. Today, this area remains a key research site for anyone wishing to understand the life of prehistoric man. The Somme basin offers favourable conditions for the conservation of archaeological sites, from the remains of the first human settlements in Northern Europe 700,000 years ago, to the last manifestations of hunter-gatherer populations before the advent of agriculture around 7,000 years ago. Over the last thirty years, major and sometimes unprecedented discoveries have been made in the département.

The "La Somme des Préhistoires" exhibition is being held at the Musée de Picardie in Amiens from 23 March to 3 November 2024. It is open from Tuesday to Friday, from 9.30am to 6pm, and on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, except 1 May, from 11am to 6pm.

Asia-Pacific Indigenous Archaeology: Emergence and Perspectives

Salle Vasari, Institut national d'Histoire de l'Art 2 rue Vivienne, Paris, France

Indigenous Archaeology is a field of archaeology focused on the involvement of indigenous peoples and communities and the integration of their interests and perspectives into the discipline, both practically and theoretically, to make it more representative, accountable, and relevant. It also aims to inform and broaden the understandings and interpretations of the archaeological record by considering indigenous knowledge systems, history, and science (Nicholas 2008: 1660). Indigenous archaeology has not developed at the same speed in the different regions of the world: practiced earlier in North America and Oceania, it is emerging more recently in Taiwan and Thailand. It takes different forms according to the local history, archaeological traditions, and sponsors involved. In this workshop, the speakers will compile a picture of the state of Indigenous archaeological research in several countries of the vast Asia and Pacific area, highlighting how historical, ethnic, and scientific specificities have shaped the approaches that have been developed. What difficulties have been encountered, and what concepts and methods have been developed? How has this approach enriched or contributed to the archaeological project carried out? What are the societal, economic, and environmental implications? The papers will also outline future developments in Indigenous archaeology and highlight methods that could be further developed.

Training on lithic technology

Base archéologique de Pincevent (Seine-et-Marne) La Grande-Paroisse, France

The aim of this workshop is twofold: to train young researchers in the technological analysis of lithic industries; and to clarify the vocabulary and work on the harmonisation of the terminology used in French, English and German.
Each day will be divided into four modules: a documentary or methodological module, a tutorial module based on archaeological or experimental collections, and a practical module with guided demonstrations of flint knapping and practical initiation to knapping. The fourth module will focus on harmonizing the vocabulary.

European Archaeology Days, flintknapping demonstration
