R valletA Divine Matter: Using material lenses to observe religious transformations in the ancient Near East
When can we track the first evidence of religious phenomena in the ancient Near East during the Pre-Pottery Neolithic? Can we envision religious transformations
without the use of textual sources? Is it a clash between transcendent and immanent forms of religiosity the reason for the emergence of monotheism in the southern Levant during the first millennium BCE? These questions that appear as mainly related to a spiritual domain are instead strongly entangled with material evidences that can be encountered in the archaeological record. Based on these premises, I will try to suggest material responses carefully using the available archaeological relics that can be associated with forms of religiosity among ancient Near Eastern societies.
