This series of seminars is aimed at the scientific community, students and anyone interested in archaeological research in the East. Programme
On Tuesday 1ᵉʳ October 2024, Frédéric ABBES (CNRS, UMR 5133 Archéorient) will speak as part of the Oriental archaeology lecture series.
‘… I inevitably think of the men of the first Stone Age. One hundred thousand, two hundred, three hundred thousand years to come up with the idea of carved stone. A phantom struggle, because they didn’t even dream of what the cut stone would one day become…’. (Henry Miller, Tropic of Capricorn). Curiously, with this sentence, H. Miller raises the fundamental problem of our studies of prehistoric industries. The way in which we question our artefacts and the answers we expect or hope for. Based on a few examples of studies, we will see how a lithic industry does or does not provide more general information, and how the choice of methodology used determines the nature of the results.
