Label of Excellence from the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres for 2026–2027 for the Froward Project: Archaeology of the Southeast Coast of the Brunswick Peninsula (Southern Patagonia)

The latest project of the Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego Archaeological Mission—San Isidro / Froward: Archaeology of the Southeast Coast of the Brunswick Peninsula (Southern Patagonia)—has been awarded the Label of Excellence by the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres for 2026–2027.
This mission is part of a long-standing French research tradition on the hunter-gatherer societies of the southernmost tip of South America. Following early ethnographic studies, archaeological missions have been conducted almost continuously in the region since 1950 (except for the 1970s), first under the direction of J. Emperaire (CNRS), then A. Laming-Emperaire (Director of Studies at EPHE) from 1959, D. Legoupil (CNRS) from 1980, and finally Marianne Christensen (Professor at Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne) since 2017.
