This talk is part of a series of lectures entitled “Working with clay around the world, the history(s) of ceramics”, organised by the Nevers Heritage Department. The series aims to shed light on the history of this almost universal medium, from Nevers, the capital of earthenware, to Chinese porcelain and pre-Hispanic terracotta.
The iconography represented on the vases, their shapes, but also their manufacturing techniques and the traces of use that they preserve make ceramics a true mirror of the pre-Columbian past. This is what C. Lara’s talk will seek to illustrate, using several examples from pre-Hispanic America. The talk will also focus on the many current local pottery communities whose skills date back to the dawn of time.
