The integrity of the body in question: The dispersal of the body (1)

As part of the seminar “The integrity of the body in question: pre- and post-depositional mortuary practices of fragmentation and dispersal” organised by Fanny Bocquentin (UMR 8068), Gregory Pereira (UMR 8096) and Pascal Sellier (UMR 7206) at the Institut d’Art et d’Archéologie, the session on 6 March 2024 will be devoted to presentations by :
Jean-Gabriel PARIAT (Service départemental d’Archéologie du Val d’Oise): Without a grave? Human remains associated with the Neolithic enclosure at Boury-en-Vexin “Le Culfroid” (Oise)
Arnaud ESQUERRE (CNRS, Institut de Recherche Interdisciplinaire sur les enjeux Sociaux): The mobility of human remains.
The 2024 funerary archaeology seminar (M2-Doctorate-Research) addresses the issue of body fragmentation, dispersal and disappearance through multidisciplinary contributions (archaeoanthropologists, but also ethnologists, archaeologists, historians, practitioners and sociologists), which should be set against strategies for preserving the integrity of the body. We will look at pre- and post-depositional practices that lead to the loss of the integrity of the body of the deceased through various processes and for various reasons (religious, pragmatic, social, etc.). We will be looking at the segmentation of human remains, their displacement, dispersal, display and even destruction; subjects who are the subject of several graves (burial of entrails, burial of the heart, etc.), relics, graves without human remains or remains that are transported, ossuaries, collective burials, and even the use of remains as furniture or as an architectural element.

Sessions are held on WEDNESDAYS from 1.30pm to 5.30pm in room 326 (3rd floor), at the Institut d’Art et d’Archéologie, 3 rue Michelet, 75006 Paris. RER B Luxembourg or Port-Royal.
