The archaeological mission of Eynan-Mallaha: 70 years of research on the early process of sedentarization in the Near East

Photographie du site d'Eynan MallahaF. Bocquentin

Fanny Bocquentin (CNRS researcher, UMR 8068 TEMPS) will speak as part of the Oriental Archaeology Lectures, on December 3, in the Françoise Héritier Room at the Institut des Civilisations – Collège de France, from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM.

Eynan-Mallaha is the first Natufian hamlet (13000–9700 BC) to have been discovered. Its salvage excavation in 1955 by Jean Perrot made it possible to completely revise the knowledge of the time about these last hunter-gatherers of the Near East, whose nomadism was now being called into question. Through ongoing field operations at this site and elsewhere, the specificity of the Natufian and its role in the Neolithization process have gradually been better defined. The resumption of a dedicated research program at Eynan-Mallaha allows us to highlight old discoveries and open the debate on new questions.
