Études des silicites
Le terme de silicite désigne l’ensemble des roches ayant subi une silicification d’origine chimique, biochimique ou diagénétique (silex, chert, silcrète et silice hydrothermale). Il permet de s’affranchir du terme silex (ou flint), dont le sens est sujet à controverse et à des incompréhensions selon qu’il est employé par les géologues, les pétrographes, les sédimentologues ou les archéologues. Nous employons donc le terme de silex uniquement pour désigner les roches ayant subi une diagenèse initiale suivie d’une épigenèse siliceuse et portant un cortex.
